Flowers are beautiful, so they say,
Look, look along the school path way.
See the colours, bright in sight,
Red, yellow, blue, pink and white.
Flowers have a sweet sweet smell,
That I do know very well,
Their softness too, I can tell,
Yet colours cast a mystery spell!
This thing called colour, I neither feel nor hear,
Please tell me why, Mommy dear?
What “look” and “see” mean – so unclear!
Are they acts we do to items near?
I am just a little blind kid, they say,
Will I see, when I grow someday?
I feel the warmth of day and the chill of night,
But still I wonder – what is light?
I know the taste of honeyed flowers,
The whispers of pattering in springtime showers.
How would I know beautiful things,
Stars that twinkle or butterflies with wings?
Are those tears falling softly on my arm?
Mom, dear mom – I meant no harm.
Because of what I say, please do not cry,
For other kids, sometimes they lie!
Mom hugged me close, her whisper was low,
“Your heart sees more than you’ll ever know.
So, keep following your heart as you grow,
Seek warm, bright colours that always glow.”
