SLMDA-UK Open Poetry Competition 2025 Announcement of Winners

We are delighted to announce the winners of the SLMDA-UK Open Poetry Competition 2025. Published on 3rd May at SLMDA Spring Dinner dance 2026. This competition was organised to celebrate literary creativity while supporting SLMDA-UK’s charitable work towards medical and dental education and healthcare-related projects in Sri Lanka. We sincerely thank all participants who submitted their poems and shared their creativity with us. We received entries in both English and Sinhala language categories. Unfortunately, we did not receive any entries in the Tamil language category this year. To ensure fairness and transparency, all poems were anonymised before judging. They were assessed by two Dr Roshan Perera and Dr Thusara Rodrigo, independent judges using a shared rubric and marking scheme. The poems were cross-judged, and the final winners were selected based on the marks awarded through this process.

We are pleased to announce the winners as follows:

English Language Category
1st Place: Akshara Dayawansha — £25 cash prize – Portraits
2nd Place: Isuri Dissanayake — £20 cash prize – Storm flakes
3rd Place: Niranjan Selvadurei — £15 cash prize – Unseen whispers
Sinhala Language Category
1st Place: Niranjan Selvadurei — £25 cash prize – නිවන් දොර අබියස
2nd Place: Jaika Withana — £20 cash prize – නිවනට නිමිත්ත
3rd Place: Niranjan Selvadurei — £15 cash prize – නාඳුනන සෙබළාගේ සොහොන

Each winner will receive,
a cash prize by bank transfer
SLMDA-UK certificate in recognition of achievement
The winning poems will also be published on the SLMDA-UK website for one year.

On behalf of SLMDA-UK, we extend our warmest congratulations to all the winners and our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated and supported this competition. We also wish to express our sincere gratitude to our judges for their time, careful assessment, and valuable contribution to ensuring a fair judging process.

Congratulations once again to all our winners!

Many Thanks
