Inaugurated in 1982, the Sri Lankan Medical and Dental Association in the UK (SLMDA), formerly known as the Sri Lankan Doctors’ Association (SLDA) is the largest charitable organization of professionals from a Sri Lankan background in the UK.
Our membership
We have a fully paid membership of more than 450 doctors and dentists, an affiliated Spouses’ Forum consisting of the spouses of members and an equally large and active Youth Forum of young doctors and medical and dental students.
Our objective
We have dedicated ourselves to supporting and fostering undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental education in Sri Lanka.
We welcome into our membership, any doctor or dentist who is interested in the welfare of less privileged Sri Lankan medical and dental students.
Our Beneficiaries
Bursaries
Every year, two deserving medical students and four dental students selected by each Faculty Board receive bursaries, each worth £150/- from SLMDA. Total annual cost is approximately £7000/- per annum
Library Books
SLMDA spends approximately £7000/- each year for new library books for the seven medical and dental libraries in Sri Lanka. In fact, we have been the main provider of books for the last 12 years.
Special Grants
At the request of the Faculty Boards, individual grants are provided for educational projects. These are one off grants rotated among the Faculties. Each grant is usually for approximately £1000/-
